Description

Students will review different types of folktales with this fun and interactive print breakout or escape activity. This is a very low prep and easy to use activity. Perfect for school librarians or classroom teachers.

Challenge 1: Students will read a short passage and answer comprehension questions bout the passage. Students will have 4 choices to choose from. In front of each choice is a picture. Once the students chooses their answer, they will see a picture in front of the folk tale. They will use those pictures to decipher the code. On the answer sheet is the picture/letter cipher.
Challenge 2: Students will read a short passage and answer comprehension questions bout the passage. Students will have 4 choices to choose from. In front of each choice is a letter. The letters will spell out the code word.
Challenge 3: Students will read a passage. There are blanks in the passage. Students will use the pictures on the bottom left of the page to help them fill in the blanks. They will write each of the words on the answer sheet. Some of the letters will have a circle around them. These letters make up the code words. Students will need to unscramble the letters.
Challenge 4: Students will read 5 different folktale descriptions. Each folktale is assigned a number. Students will write the number for each answer on their recording sheet. When they are done, they will add up the numbers to figure out the lock code.

Additional notes for Folktales – Print Breakout Escape Activity:
  • I estimate this print breakout to take 40 – 45 minutes to complete since there are 4 challenges (depending on the grade level used)
  • I recommend this for 2nd grade (with more guidance), 3rd or 4th grade
  • The escape activity can easily be completed in multiple class periods or as a whole-group activity
