As the end of the school year approaches, we are faced with one of our biggest challenges: tracking down all those missin library books! Over the years, I’ve tested a variety of strategies with mixed success. In this post, I’m sharing some creative tips and tried-and-true ideas to help you encourage students to return their books before summer break officially begins.
Morning Announcement Reminders

Give daily reminders during morning announcements. Add a silly twist – maybe a different “book joke of the day” or a dramatic plea from a “lonely book.”
Example: “Why did the overdue book cross the road?
To get back to the library before summer!”
Make It Fun and Visible
Put up colorful, eye-catching signs around the school. Think big fonts, bold colors, and clever sayings. Try funny ones like:
- “Your library book called. It wants to come home.”
- “Books don’t want to spend summer under your bed.”
- “Return your book before it tans at the beach!”
Bonus: Add visuals like sunglasses-wearing books or a “missing book” wanted poster.

Offer Small Incentives

Consider offering a fun reward to the first class in each grade level that returns all of their library books. A little friendly competition can go a long way! Here are some prize ideas your students will love:
- Lunch in the library
- Outdoor picnic lunch
- Ice cream sundaes – set up an assembly line to make it easy if you’re serving multiple classes
- Cool treats like freeze pops or ice cream sandwiches as a simpler alternative
- Popcorn and a movie
- Outdoor reading day with music, drinks, and plenty of good books under the shade
- Bonus library time for games, STEM stations, or a special makerspace project
- Flashlight reading – turn out the lights and let them read with flashlights for a fun twist
- Dance party in the library
- Bubble-blowing break outside
Get Teachers On Board
Ask teachers to set aside time for students to search desks, cubbies, and backpacks. Some of those books are probably hiding in plain sight! You can even provide teachers with pre-written reminders to share in newsletters or class apps.

Raffles

Another fun incentive is to hold a raffle for students who return all of their library books. Each time a student turns in all their books, enter their name into the drawing. Here are some simple and effective prize ideas:
- Reuse display posters from the Scholastic Book Fair as unique prizes
- Restaurant or movie gift cards—ask local businesses if they’re willing to donate
- Let students pick a prize from a treasure box filled with small toys, treats, or fun trinkets
- Partner with your PTO to help fund or donate raffle items
- Offer free books—buy bargain packs, slightly damaged books from Scholastic, or grab extras of popular titles during your book fair to save for prizes
- A raffle adds excitement and gives students something to look forward to while encouraging them to get those books turned in!
Other Ideas
Set a fun school-wide goal to motivate students to return their library books—and sweeten the deal with a wild reward! Let them know that if all books (or a set percentage) are returned by a specific date, you’ll do something silly or unforgettable. Here are some ideas to get students excited:
- Take a pie to the face during an assembly
- Dye your hair a bright or unusual color
- Kiss a pig (or a stuffed animal version)
- Get duct taped to the wall by students
- Let students who return all their books throw water balloons at you on field day
- Wear a silly costume (banana suit, superhero, etc.) for a day
- Let students give you a funny new hairstyle—with clips, scrunchies, or hair chalk
